When will this new 21st century learning really catch on?

Does anyone else out there find that it's hard to get students to "buy into" this new way of learning? I was sooooooo excited about bringing in the Wiki to our high school class, but they just don't really get it, or don't get into it... maybe like it's been with us adults, not really getting into this 21st Century Wetpaint wiki... as much as we could...
I think a conversation would make it much more interesting, is it happening anywhere? I could use some encouragement, to keep at it... to figure out how to make it an "active learning" thing!

It is like us...I mean why would we come to a wiki? We would come if we could find something we needed. If the collaborations went both ways and we learned something when we came...so maybe the same is for your students. What do you think the road blocks are? Do you think they need a specific way in...a specific question to think about, a specific video to respond to? How have you used it? What have you tried and in what context? Maybe we can think this through here.
Check out Coloradolearns wiki- there are a couple examples and links to teachers using wikis with kids...it might be helpful. Feel free to join there too. We'd love to have you. Here's the link to the Teaching page of "promising pracitces where there are some links to student wikis. http://coloradolearns.wetpaint.com/page/Teaching
Let's continue this discussion. I am really interested in what you've tried.

Have your students seen any 'benefit' in knowing their work will provide a good source for their own review AND a great tool for the students that follow them? One of things I hope to do is get students to become 'aware' of community. Group intelligence is the way the world works. Most kids are already group oriented. They may not see the benefit in a more abstract way., If/when they do, does that help ease the reluctance? Do you find this valuable?

I think the key to high activity in learning is a super strong signal from the WIIFM channel. We all listen for "whats in it for me" ~ the more me I hear ~ the more me I share.

Have you asked the students to tell you more about their experience with the wiki approach you are using? They will tell you about the lack of WIIFM volume if you ask as if you want to listen to them.

Ownership is so important. Try co-creating the wiki assignment with them. Tell them you want to learn more about its usefulness for digital natives(them) and you need their help. Tell them the wiki is all about them not you, or grades, or school, or assignment completion. Ask them 'If you were trying to learn something about the music industry (like free file sharing) how would you gather a group and use a wiki to learn about that?' Ask them to own the learning.

If they still say no... then ask them to use the wiki to support their "no" answer and gain support for their position from other classmates. hahaha ~ a little tricky slip in.

Good luck and how is it going now? Update please?

I love your suggestion about the "super strong signal from the WIIFM channel"-- that' s the bottom line for all of us, isn't it?
This conversation has certainly got me having a stronger sense of WIIFM.... and I'm willing to invest more of myself when I see others taking part.
I also like the reverse psychology idea of getting them to support their no answer...
We'll see what happens when I present my idea to the younger ones in our school... those who just got Wetpaint Legal-- turning 13 recently!

oh I'm so glad you responded and found that helpful.

Listen, not meant to nit pick my friend but words are so important when it comes to the energy of our goals so I want to share two little things I noticed...
1) the WIIFM signal is so important in our journey as people. Without it we wonder around without a sense of who we are which can lead to big problems like abusive relationships and addictions. Be careful not to characterize this natural human quality as a problem. Listening for what is important to us is not the problem - being expected to follow what is important only to others is fertile ground for problems. ~smiles

2) Presenting ideas in a powerfully engaging way is the mark of a master teacher. I wish you plenty of success presenting your ideas but more importantly I hope you attract ideas and facilitate a sense of shared experience (ownership). Be careful to not to put your attention on presenting (teaching from the front of the room which is so 20th century). Instead of teaching or presenting your ideas, re-focus your goal 'to FACILITATING a shared learning experience' ~one where others talk more than you do ~one where you guide (facilitate) them to the answers and awareness you want them to discover rather than you telling them or presenting your idea and asking them to comply. This approach may seem hard or unfamiliar at first but just think conversation instead of presentation and see how that instantly changes the way you interact in the experience of sharing your ideas with these young learners.

These two tiny re-directs are very subtle but pack a big punch as truly 21st century teaching points. I certainly hope I have not sent my thoughts as criticisms. You are really onto something here. I'm so excited and proud for you, and I simply want to support your success in the clearest and most beneficial way.

Stay in touch Angela ~ I can't wait to hear more.

oops - you did not characterize WIIFM as a problem Angela.
** sorry ~ I think I heard that because I heard it as a human problem when I first learned about it and it took me a while to get comfortable with the concepts.
Sent with peace and love,
