We've moved away from the font of all knowledge, the sage on the stage, to the guide on the side - a facilitator. However, many of today's students are bringing their own, new, knowledge to the clasroom. How do teachers respond to this? Students want to bring their preferred learning platforms into the classroom and if we are to make in school and out of school learning link seemlessly we need to encourage the use of gaming and mobile devices. Are we preparing students for the future? An uncertain future where change and development is the norm. Are we still using yesterday's tools to prepare students for tomorrow?

I would like to hear from elementary school teachers that have had their students use virtual resources (example: http://www.loc.gov/rr/askalib/virtualref.html) for research projects. Please let me know which grade you teach, what resources you've used, and how effective they were.

Does anyone have any good news about this business of being highly qualified? Seems like the ramifications of NCLB are ongoing and getting worse. Would love to hear from anyone about how they've handled this nightmare.

Does anyone else out there find that it's hard to get students to "buy into" this new way of learning? I was sooooooo excited about bringing in the Wiki to our high school class, but they just don't really get it, or don't get into it... maybe like it's been with us adults, not really getting into this 21st Century Wetpaint wiki... as much as we could... I think a conversation would make it much more interesting, is it happening anywhere? I could use some encouragement, to keep at it... to figure out how to make it an "active learning" thing!

oops - you did not characterize WIIFM as a problem Angela. ** sorry ~ I think I heard that because I heard it as a human problem when I first learned about it and it took me a while to get comfortable with the concepts. Sent with peace and love,

I'd like to hear from folks who have found this whole wiki idea working with schools/ classes... especially in high school or with older middle school students... I'm really questioning the time investment... and wondering how to get quality, not just "fluff".

This tool is awesome and inspired me to add a page under Web 2.0 Tools = Collaborative Tools. There are a few more tools to add to that page, so add away if you know of any. VoiceThread is probably the most user friendly, intuitive interface I have seen.

SIM Kathy, voicethread is great. there is also an ed.VoideThread too. Take a look at SlideRocket. It also is slick.. You might want to add a link to your page that points to http://collabvsl.wetpaint.com/page/Wikis+and+File+Sharing+Tools
We've got a pretty nice list of stuff there. Vic

Has anyone seen the research to support these claims? I am sceptical that humans have fundamentally changed in the way they think and process information within a few years or decades. Seems to me that these changes might take a tad longer.

RE: Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants

From an evolutionary perspective, human thinking will change fundamentally when those who cope with digital tools well have more children than those who do not....
But seriously, if there was good evidence that digital tools improved cognition or student learning, then we would be having this information crammed down our throats. There are many vested interests in showing that computers are good for learning, but little evidence. PISA, for example, shows a negative effect of computer use on student results, both by individual and by country. Recent American studies on reading show something similar.
As for the idea that kids are native and we are immigrants - this is bunk. As Mike Wesch (http://www.youtube.com/user/mwesch) says, "There are no natives here". Blogging, YouTube, Flickr, VoiceThread, (etc. etc.) all this stuff is so new that no-one has really grasped its potential, let alone children. I work in a high school where all the kids have grown up in homes with computers and internet connections, but their 'digital competancy' is mostly pretty low. They have to learn, just like the rest of us.

Hello,
I am trying to view the wiki "Curriculum resources for teachers" which was provided in the form of a link through your wiki. When I get there, it says it is a "private wiki" and doesn't appear to give me an option of being invited. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Will the comment function work as a way for participants to share "best practices" or examples on this page?

I noticed that change too. On another note, I'd like to work on a page from NCCE discoveries. We could have some good discussions re: the conference. Vicki

I'm doing a web-site media project for Instructional Design grad class and am looking for good digital World maps. Probably best to use 1 or 2 color outline type maps; maybe black background for oceans. (Includes Antarctica).
I cannot find ones I like, although I have found some free ones that are useable. I'll be adding interactive elements to it for mouse-overs, or Flash animation, so would be background layer.

Fredz: your project sounds interesting. Assuming you have probably combed the web, you might try to find Facts on File reference notebooks in your library to scan maps (print notebooks) if you can get permission. They are generally simple outlines and you might be able to alter them in Photoshop. If you altered them enough, perhaps you would not need to get permission to use them. Send us a link to your site if you want to share the finished product. \We are also hoping to begin a whole section of curriculum resources and examples. To date we have focused on new technologies and tools. Kathy
